Attentives

Attentives focus the thinking’s natural randomness into a useful and productive pattern. Read one a week—just pick a start date that is easy to remember—then give it attention during the week. This can be in the car or shower, for example, or when on the tread mill, doing house cleaning or yard work. Ruminate, think it over, question it—even reflect if you choose—but spend a little easy going time with it. If you forget just pick it up when you remember—after three to four days the Attentives will still “work” outside your attention. Again, just one a week, there are no rewards for finishing early.

If you discuss these with friends and family, remember that they may not be interested or impressed. The goal is your self-discovery; your gains are yours alone. Let them comment later on how well you’re doing.

Take note of favorites and dislikes. Dislikes may signify the most ignored—and needed—area of self-discovery. So might those that speak the softest. They are often very rewarding.

The Attentives are more powerful the second time around.
